Graffiti background for Inverness based photographer Brian Mcintosh 

The freshpaint team will showcase  some graffiti Art installations, also a live painting at Belladrum festival Inverness.On a mission to reveal the unbelievable truth amongst the trees, Mr green, Mr blue and Mr red will be sharing some of the finest alien graffiti on planet earth.

Thanks to Ian and Ads  for a great collaboration.

Visitors are being welcomed to Hilton Community Centre by new graffiti art painted by local teenager.

A large welcome sign and drawing with a scottish theme have been artistically added to an exterior wall at the centre after Highland council’s youth development officer Naomi Hyslop worked with 11 to 15 year olds in the summer holiday.

Highland council gave permission for the work to be done after input from the area’s ward manager Stuart wardlaw.

During the easter holiday, around 14 youngsters were involved in a similar project on an interior wall in the community centre.

Naomi said” The kids rally enjoyed themselves and people have been very supportive of what they produced”

A few people didn’t get mentioned in this Highland News article, never mind myself but Drew and Brian from Youth Inclusive were of a great help during the graffiti workshop, also the community centre staff were great, as always.

We had 4h to plan the design and 4h to paint it on  canvas.

One of the big challenge during the art workshop was to get the youngsters to forget about A4 type of artwork done with pens /pencil  and adapt to a larger support with brushes and paint.

About 13 kids got involved in the street art project, i did the original sketch and  the final outline myself  as they were struggling to get thin lines, except that they did it all themselves, they did fantastic.

I was very impressed how the girls started to sketch freehand the character then painted it without any help, the boys however were less confident and waited for the outlines. They all showed great potential during the Art workshop.

Graffiti artists struck at Hilton Community Centre recently- but everyone was happy.

Artist Marc Delaye, who is originaly from France, was there to show his skills to youngsters, including nine-years old Tom Healy.

Centre co-ordinator Susan Menzies said: “He’s a wonderfull artist and we had him at our youth club a couple of weeks ago. The kids just love watching him at work and learned a lot from him.

“We also had drama and craft workshops and the kids who attended had great fun”

The programme was organised by Highland Council youth development officer Naomi Hislop in association with the community center.

Here are a few graffiti logos made in adobe illustrator, super fine detail, sharp lines and crisp images.

Originaly the van was yellow/orange and  the first design idea was to make it look like a B Veyron..

I have to say it’s been a very challenging spraying experience as the colours that i had were far from the design , so at one point i had to go with plan B and improvise.

I think it came out pretty cool, ready for the meet at Loch Lomond this week end with the Scottish vanners.

The kids had the choice between 2 workshops, graffiti art and street dance, very positive evening.

Graffiti workshop for kids 12+

This online workshop will guide you step by step to realise a colourful graffiti piece.

Materials needed: A4 paper, pencil, rubber, chisel point marker pen, thin black pen and a good selection of colour pens.

::CAUTION ::This activity requires investing time and effort to practice.

DOCUMENTATION

I would start this graffiti workshop the same way i would start any workshop session, with a lot of pictures to look at, that definatly helps for inspiration.

I usually use Graphotism magazin, here on the internet i would suggest the flikr public group GRAFFITI=LETTERS.

Try to focus on the letters and try to read them also try to recognize all the different elements that compose a piece:

-The letter structure(the shape of the letters, simple block letters, semi wildstyle, wildstyle, 3D style, cali style, throwie style…)

-The fill (gradient fill top to bottom…)

-The effects (wave effects, bubbles, splashes, cracks, chip …)

- The outlines(thick, thin..)

-The 3D (straight 3d, up, down, left, right, using vanishing point, work on the volumes…)

-The background(minimalist, busy, abstract, dirty grunge…)

It’s important to spend a bit of time browsing, just to make sure we are talking about the same thing.

CHOOSE A WORD

Try to think about a word, less than 5 letters works well on A4 sheet of paper.

Avoid to write a phrase as it’s quite hard to keep the flow (unity or consistency between the letters).

It can be any words, anything really, if you haven’t got a clue here is a list to help you:

a name, a nickname, a pet’s name, a band, a football team, a colour, a sister’s name, a brother’s name, a boyfriend’s name, a girlfriend’s name, a car , an animal, a city,…anything that makes sense for you.

Try to avoid using graffiti writers names already in use , you can easily check out at Art Crimes the worldwide database.

Write with your own handwriting the chosen words in the corner of the page.

HANDSTYLE/GRAFFITI TAG

This exercise is based on style and speed.Don’t try to sketch,remember you’re writing.

Give different variations of the word you’ve chosen in step 2, you need to be productive.

Here is list of things to try: alternate capital / small letters, start small finish big, add nice dynamics, italic style, cursive style..it doesn’t matter how you do it but you need to get movement,and get the letters to 2 “dance”.

Also if you’re using a chisel marker pen, experiment with the chisel point horizontal, vertical, 45 degree angle.

Use the tag Alphabet if needed.

After you’ve filled up a few pages, gather them, get a step back and choose the tag that you feel like the best, and with a thin black pen outline it , leaving a few millimeters of white between the tag and the outline.That’s gonna be the base , the structure of your piece.

It’s time for a good tidy up, get rid of of those pages covered of tags and only keep the final outlined tag, you can make a frame and fold the paper so you focus on the final tag.

GUIDE LINES/ BARS

The guidelines are gonna be used to keep your letters accurate, and they are just constructions lines (double lines).

We are gonna used 2 types, straight parallels and bent parallels.

The next step is to follow the letter structure of the tag, and redo it with those parallel lines. It’s important to keep a good consistency, same width between the parallel lines.

Try to get some nice chunky letters (if the parallel are too narrow you won’t be able to add effects in them), add some arrows, jump off, you can get the letters to overlap each

other, break some angles, get the corner slightly rounded, make sure you keep a good flow (consistency,unity)between the letters..

This part of the sketching process is a real science, check out the exchange website for inspiration and clever comments regarding the process of making a graffiti piece.

outline your lettering and rub off the construction lines.

COLOURS

Colours are like music notes , you will need a few of them to get harmony, if you mix the wrong ones together you will get a painful result.

There are some classic combinations that work quite well like using warm colours in the background and cold ones for your graffiti piece and vice versa.

Try not to use the same colour in the fill and the 3d and the background that might just be confusing.

A good thing to do is to use primary colors (yellow, red, blue) as a base for your colour choice , eg: fill yellow, 3d blue, background red.

Complementary colours (yellow/violet, green/red, blue/orange)works well to get a maximum contrast.

THE FILL

We’re gonna draw 2 horizontal lines and divide the piece in 3 parts .

Start coloring in each part with 3 different colours,colours from the same range works well, eg: white, yellow, orange.

Then blend in each part with the darker colour that you’ve used , eg: orange on the yellow,and yellow on the white

You can use any patterns, i usually use bubbles, as it’s easy to do but any patterns would do (strokes, square…)

EFFECTS

It’s time to add a few effects to the lettering, not to much, just enough to spice up the piece a bit.

If you’ve used orange, yellow and white for the fill some random red effects would work pretty well.

Here is a list of the most popular graffiti effects : stars, bubbles, wave effects, chip effects, skyline, wall cracks, strokes, strippes, highlights, light shine effects…

3D

There are different ways to get the 3D right.The proper way is to do a vanishing point , and draw some lines from every angles to reach the point,then choose a width for your 3D , then get the parallel of the letter, make sure the 3D got the same width all the way through the piece.

Another way is to choose a direction, up, down, right, left,with horizontal or vertical straight lines,then again choose the width,then parallel to the letter.(this way is much easier)

Colour in the 3D with a light colour so you will be abble to add a few stripes on it with a darker colour , a rectangle that you colours in then a line, at the top, at the middle, then at the bottom of the 3D.That effect will give more strenght to the volumes.

THE FORCE FIELD

The force field is an outside outline,between the piece and the background.

The same way we did the outline at the begining on the tag.Try to leave some white.

THE BACKGROUND

Background is used to make the piece stand out from the piece,( the colour or design painted behind the piece to make it stand out.)

Don’t neglect it, it shouldn’t be too overpowering either.

Here is a list of background design that you can use to enhance your lettering: simple frame, lines with different thickness, bubbles, wall cracks, splashes of paint, clouds…

Part of the Shetland Art tour 2010, got invited  to refresh a wall at Sandwick youth club, the old mural which was originaly there was related to local sealife, we decided to go for tropical fishes  mural as they’re much more  colourfull than the local species.We met up with the youngsters on a nice sunny day and after a rough sketch the kids started to paint…

“Some street-art work is worthy of being on display in a gallery.”

As you walk into Transition you will notice our purpose built Graffiti Wall.

Funded by Aberdeen City Council and installed in March 2009, the wall was launched in May 2009 with support from Whitespace and local artists. Since then the wall has served as a legal space for aerosol graffiti art with many local artists regularly “getting up” at Transition. Running alongside the building itself the wall is in a perfect, sheltered spot to practice techniques and get creative without worrying about the law.

Since it was built, Transition has used the wall for holding graffiti workshops, working with the community and promoting street art in the area. It’s completely free and anyone is welcome to come down and take some space, the only restriction is the weather!

Urban Art Workshop with Youth Groups from Tillydrone and Seaton at Transition Extreme

Arts Development have been working with two youth groups from Tillydrone and Seaton over several months on the subject of Urban Art, frstly in order to engage the groups into creative activity, secondly to educate the groups about the difference between art and vandalism, and thirdly to encourage the groups to work creatively as a means to express themselves in a productive manner.

Both youth groups (young males and females aged between 14 and 18) have responded very well to the activity and shown an extraordinary commitment to the classes and activities. After a first introduction into the art form, many of the participants felt confident enough to create their own sketches based on their names, and thus developed a unique visual identity over the weeks, an incredibly important factor in Arts Development’s objective to raise the self-esteem and confidence of Aberdeen’s citizens.

These arts classes culminate now in a 2 day Urban Art workshop under the guidance of Marc Delaye, Graffiti Artist and Arts Educator . Marc Delaye, Arts Development, youth workers and the youth groups from Tillydrone and Seaton will collaboratively create a large Urban Art mural at Transition Extreme’s legal Graffiti Wall.

Marc will also give a staff training on the subject to arts tutors and youth workers, so that they can continue to work with the groups in this art form.

Apart from the great progress that the young participants have made in terms of creative development, we consider this project a great chance to engage the youth of two neighbourhoods in a collaborative project and we hope that this project further deepens the connections between Tillydrone and Seaton, which already have been established through adult learning groups.

Marc Delaye is based in Inverness. He has worked extensively with young people in schools and arts organisations in France and Scotland. He is an experienced graffiti artist specialising in banner making, t-shirt stencilling, mural design and aerosol art.

The project takes place on a legal graffiti wall, which is situated just outside Transition Extreme, near the beach.

Giant beasties have been found crawling around Granton primary school, but there is no need to call rentokil- the bugs are the creation of Inverness graffiti artist and the youngsters of the town.

Marc Delaye and a group of 11 to 15 year olds have been giving a colourful new lease of life to a ramshakle shed in the grounds of the primary school, which was formerly a classroom.

The four sides of the building have been covered in images of gigantic, brightly coloured bugs surrounded by exotic plants and grasses of all different, shapes and colours.

Funding for the project which was completed on thursday after several days of hard work, has come from the highland council, and childrens services workers from Grantown and Aviemore were involved in bringing the project to life.

Head teacher at the school, Mairi Robertson, is delighted with the result.”the shed was a classroom many years ago, and has been an eyesore for a long time”she said.

“the children will all be delighted when they come back from their summer break next month and see the transformation.

”we are really grateful to allthe youngsters who have been involved in creating these wonderful beasties.

I must admit when i walk past the mural it helps put a smile on my face-it just has that sort of effect. I just hope it does the same for everyone else.

School neighbours George and Mabel Paton have also been admiring the new artwork dreamed up by spray can artist delaye and the local yougsters.

”It is really colourful and a great improvement on what was there”,mr paton said from their house which overlooks the shed.

Jane Wilson,children services worker for grantown,said that the project had caught the imagination of the youngsters.”they have been so focused and hard working…

Has anyone that has attended any of your workshops gone on to bigger and better things?
Now and then im getting teenagers who r planning to go to artschool, and they are attending the workshop to fill up their portofolio, i don’t stay in touch with them.

How have you found the experience of running the workshops and is it something you would recomend other artists to get involved in?
I think it s a good way to pay for the paint , the only thing is to be carefull not to let the commissions eat you
and still do ur own stuff next to it, think forward , don’t involve too many kids, always keep in mind the level expected.”
