Graffiti mural brightens up Sandveien, Shetland

Graffiti mural brightens up Sandveien

LERWICK’s Sandveien estate is enjoying a new splash of colour after young people created a graffiti mural in the area as part of a summer activity programme.

The artwork focuses on the nearby Clickimin Broch, while it also features Viking-themed illustrations. It can be found on a wall at the multi court area next to the Sandveien Neighbourhood Centre.

The children teamed up with visiting graffiti artist Marc Delaye, who regularly holds community workshops.

The artist – who goes by the name of Fresh Paint – arrived in Shetland earlier this week and is holding the Sandveien session for three days.

It was organised by Shetland Islands Council’s youth services team, and development worker Martin Summers said the graffiti has already attracted plenty of attention.

“Over the three days young people will gather at the centre and work on creating this wonderful graffiti artwork,” he said on Wednesday morning.

“It has been amazing to watch the process so far, and I am excited to see the finished piece.”

Summers added that Delaye is set to return to Shetland in 2018 to undertake a large scale mural to mark the “year of young people”.
